We built the note app
we actually wanted to use.

Calm, local-first, and monospace-led. No accounts, no tracking, no cloud by default. Just you and your notes.

Built around a few ideas that don't bend.

Local-first.Your data stays on your device

Notes live in your browser's local storage. Nothing leaves your machine unless you choose to export it. No servers, no syncing you didn't ask for, no silent uploads.

Monospace-led.The right typeface for thinking

MonoJot uses a monospace font throughout because it imposes a quiet visual rhythm on text. Every character takes the same width. Writing feels more deliberate.

No lock-in.Your notes are always portable

Export your full library as a JSON backup or download individual notes as plain .txt files. If you ever leave, you take everything — in formats that open anywhere.

Calm by design.Designed to get out of the way

No dashboards, no gamification, no nudges. A writing surface, a library on the side, and panels that appear when you call them and disappear when you don't.

A note app that takes writing seriously.

MonoJot started as a personal tool — a place to write without being managed. Most note apps ask you to create an account before you've typed a single word, or push you toward features that make the app more useful to them than to you.

The goal was simpler: an app that loads immediately, stores notes locally, and gets out of the way. Markdown because it stays legible as plain text. Monospace because it makes every character feel intentional. No accounts because there's nothing to log in to.

Seven major versions later, MonoJot has grown to include Smart Typing for inline math and unit conversions, [[Note links]] and a Map panel for note relationships, Writing Insights, a Today panel with local weather and reminders, Screen Lock, and a full backup and recovery system — while remaining a single static file that deploys anywhere in seconds.

v7.26.9
Current version

Single static HTML — deploys anywhere

Required to get started

More depth than it first appears.

Smart Typing

Write 2+2= and MonoJot evaluates it inline. Unit conversions work the same way — 10km = becomes 6.21 mi without leaving the editor.

[[Note links]] + Map

Link notes with [[Note Title]] syntax. The Map panel visualises backlinks, outgoing links, tags, and @mentions as a navigable relationship graph.

Today panel

Local weather via browser geolocation — no third-party account required — plus reminders and a calendar view, in a panel beside the editor.

Writing Insights

Word count, readability grade, estimated reading time, and paragraph metrics — always for the current note, always one panel away.
